Weather Policy

Weather Guidelines
The VP of Field Operations will determine if games can be played under safe conditions and the City of Coppell will determine if the games will be played due to poor field conditions. Local lightning shall always be considered hazardous. In the event of lightning or thunder all play must stop.

Retreat to a building or car (not a convertible). Lightning can strike up to 6 miles away from the base of the thunderstorm. Play may resume after 30 minutes from the last evidence of lightning or thunder. Please do not put a life at risk over youth rec soccer practice. Teams must report to the field ready to play regardless of the weather unless the coach has been notified by the age-specific commissioner or the Hotline has posted a cancellation prior to the game. If you are scheduled to play a game away from Coppell, contact the local home association for postponement information.

The City of Coppell Parks and Recreation Department has installed the Thor Guard Lightning Prediction System in most area parks to alert when conditions are favorable for lightning strikes. If the Thor Guard siren goes off during a game in progress, the game is immediately called and players, coaches and spectators are to evacuate to their vehicles. More information about the Thor Guard system is available on the City of Coppell’s website. Instructions are also mounted on each base unit location.

ATTENTION: These are only guidelines and some exceptions to them will occur. The VP of Field Operations makes the final decision and will post the decision on the Hotline. The coach of each team should always refer to the Hotline at 972/436-8648 before game time if there is any doubt games will be played as scheduled.

Postponements
The VP of Field Operations is responsible for determining whether a game must be canceled or postponed due to weather at any time up to the start of play.

When field conditions may be considered questionable due to inclement weather, the VP of Field Operations will update the Hotline by 3:30 p.m. on weekdays, 7:00 a.m. for Saturday and by noon on Sundays. Coaches, parents and players may check for current field conditions online or call the weather hotline at 972/436-8648.

If the Thor Guard siren goes off during a game in progress, the game is immediately called and players, coaches and spectators are to evacuate to their vehicles. If the game was at least 5 minutes into second half or more, the game is considered complete and will not be rescheduled. Otherwise, the game will be rescheduled at a later date, as long as there are reschedule dates available. This determination will be made by the referee as to whether the game meets the criteria as a completed game and will report this to the league and referee scheduler.

For games not in progress but set to start within the hour, (or next set of games scheduled) a decision will be made concerning those games at their scheduled game time.

For inclement weather where there is a dangerous situation but with no siren activation, the referee on the field is responsible for calling the game with the support of the stand-by referee.
